AVX adds Global Advanced Metals to “Solutions for Hope” Project

AVX (NYSE:AVX), a leading manufacturer of passive components and interconnect solutions, announced that GAM Technology (the first tantalum smelter to achieve EICC/GeSI validation in 2010) has joined AVX in their “Solutions for Hope” Project.  Solutions for Hope was established by AVX in July 2011 with leading OEMs like Motorola, Intel, Nokia, RIM and HP.

GAM Technology is processing its fourth validated shipment of conflict-free tantalite ore from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).  All  tantalum ore set for export is subjected to independent on-the-ground assessment. GAM reportedly owns the worlds’ largest known resource of tantalum ore in its Western Australian mines.

AVX is the first in its industry to validate a closed tantalum pipe process.  Consistent with the Dodd-Frank legislation and OECD guidelines, the validation assures that products will contain conflict free tantalum.   The Solutions for Hope project helps to demonstrate that conflict-free minerals can be sustainably mined and shipped in a responsible manner in the DRC.
